31st Koblenz International Guitar Festival & Academy 21st May - 29th May 2023
The Koblenz International Guitar Academy is an all-year-round working Academy of the Koblenz International Guitar Festival. It is divided into six departments dedicated to the development, training and further education of guitarists from all over the world. The Academy works in collaboration with the Hochschule für Musik der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie, the Musikschule der Stadt Koblenz and the Koblenz International Guitar Society.


Departments:

I) Master’s Degree Programme (MMus) in cooperation with the Hochschule für Musik der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz.


Introduction
 
The Master’s Degree Programme (MMus) in Guitar, is a post-graduate degree course, which aims to provide advanced-level training and in-depth artistic and academic knowledge in relation to the guitar. The course draws on the combined expertise of one of Germany’s leading colleges of music (http://www.musik.uni-mainz.de/) and specialised guitar institutions. Students are enrolled at both of the institutions.
 
Course Content
  • The course is full-time over 2 years (4 semesters) and focuses on both solo and chamber music performance.
  • Specialist individual tuition with Prof. Hubert Käppel.
  • Opportunity to work on diverse chamber music projects with a special emphasis on vocal accompaniment.
  • As well as regular performance classes, there are also frequent chances to perform as part of the many concerts/events at the Hochschule für Musik Mainz and Koblenz International Guitar Academy.
  • Coaching/Tuition from internationally renowned performers and teachers from the Hochschule für Musik Mainz.
  • Students will also explore historical and modern performance practice and can take part in the interdisciplinary studies part of the curriculum.
  • Writing and performance practice of transcriptions, arrangements and general bass.
  • 120 credit points - ECTS.
  • Students also benefit from the close connection to the Koblenz International Guitar Festival.
Entry Requirements
  • Students should hold a Bachelor's degree or a similar degree-equivalent diploma in Music, specialising in guitar.
  • An entrance examination must be undertaken in the form of an audition. Candidates are required to prepare a varied 45 minute programme (to include at least one work by J.S. Bach), from which 20 minutes will be chosen for performance during the audition.
  • A short interview with the audition panel, conducted in German (about 10 minutes duration).
  • One year’s professional work experience.
  • For international students, in addition to German language skills at a minimum B1-GERR level, English language skills are also required.
  • The course can be started in both the winter and summer semester. The auditions will take place on specified dates during the winter or summer semester at the Hochschule für Musik Mainz or Koblenz International Guitar Festival & Academy. Candidates will be informed in good time of the audition date.
Fees
  • Tuition fees in the amount of €2580 per semester (€5160 per year).
  • Semester fees of the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz in the amount of €309,89. This includes a Semester-Ticket, allowing free travel on public transport between Mainz and Koblenz, and also other selected parts of Rheinland-Pfalz and Hessen.
At present in Rheinland-Pfalz there are no separate fees or costs for foreign students.
 
How to Apply
 
An audition application should be made directly to the student office of the Hochschule für Musik Mainz. The application form can be downloaded here (Antrag auf Zulassung zur Eignungsprüfung):
 
 
When completed it should be posted to the address on the form, along with:
  • Certified copy of previous academic achievements (e.g. Bachelor’s Degree plus supplements/transcripts).
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Audition Programme.
  • Repertoire list of significant works already studied.
  • Examples of at least one year’s professional work experience (e.g. Concerts, teaching, competitions).
  • Two stamped self-addressed envelopes (DL/0,70 € und C4/1,45 €).
Important for applicants with foreign certificates:
An application for the recognition/validation of foreign certificates must be made to the Stabsstelle Zulassung International, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz.

  • All 3 sides must be printed out, completed, signed and sent by post. Please note, forms sent by email or fax will NOT be accepted.
  • Officially certified copies of previous academic achievements (e.g. Bachelor’s Degree) should be included, with all relevant supplements, and if needed an official translation of the documents/certificates. Please note, that documents in English will be accepted.
Please be aware that this process can take up to 6 weeks to complete, and must be submitted in good time, so that the audition application can be accepted. For example, for the winter semester (deadline 01 April 2018), documents should be submitted no later than 15 February 2018.
 
The fee for the recognition/validation of foreign certificates is €60, and must be paid before the application is processed. Bank details can be found on page 3 of the form.
 
An application to study must also be made to the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz and should be submitted via the Student Secretariat or International Department of the JGU.
 
The deadline for the audition application at the Hochschule für Musik Mainz is:
  • Summer semester - 01 November.
  • Winter semester - 01 April.
The deadline for the application to study at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz is:
  • Summer semester - 01 March.
  • Winter semester - 01 September.

Accommodation
 
The Koblenz International Guitar Academy has its own student accommodation, especially for overseas students.
The rooms are fully furnished and cost, depending on size, from €380 (room) to €500 (apartments) per month, including all utility expenses and Internet connection.

II) Preparatory studies (Bachelor) in collaboration with the Musikschule der Stadt Koblenz:

Subjects:

Guitar, second instrument (optional), performance class, music theory, aural training, general music teaching, sight-singing.
 

Examinations:

Two examinations per year.
 

Faculty:

Prof. Hubert Käppel (guitar), Georg Schmitz (theory)

Foreign students may also take classes in German language, in preparation for the German Examination of the German Music Colleges.
 

Entry Requirements:

Instrumental entrance examination (10-minute free programme) and aural test.
 

Course Fees:

1,680 euros each year. Fees should be paid to the Musikschule der Stadt Koblenz.

III) Preparatory Studies (Master)

Subjects:

Guitar, performance class, optional: music theory, aural training, general music teaching, sight-singing. We recommend that foreign students take part in theory lessons to help them learn German musical terminology.
 

Examinations:

Two examinations per year.
 

Faculty:

Entry Requirements:

Completed music studies (Bachelor) and an audition (15-minute free programme and one movement from a work by J.S. Bach).
 

Course Fees:

2.750 euros each year. Fees should be paid to the Koblenz International Guitar Academy.


IV) Specialist department for very gifted young students in collaboration with the Musikschule der Stadt Koblenz:

Subjects:

Guitar, appropriate theory classes are optional.
 

Examinations:

Two examinations per year.
 

Faculty:

Prof. Hubert Käppel (guitar), Georg Schmitz (theory).
 

Entry Requirements:

Instrumental entrance examination (6-minute free programme) and aural test. In this department guitarists seeking entry will be accepted from roughly 8 or 9 years of age. Parents who are interested in applying should get in contact with the Director of the Musikschule der Stadt Koblenz, Herr Hans-Peter Lörsch (0261 129 2551).
 

Course Fees:

1,680 euros each year. Fees should be paid to the Musikschule der Stadt Koblenz.

V) Postgraduate Studies in collaboration with the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie and the Musikschule der Stadt Koblenz:

Subjects:

Guitar, performance class, chamber music, music theory, aural training, analysis, health management for professional musicians, music management.
 

Examinations:

Final Examination Part I:

Solo Recital (60 minutes).
 

Final Examination Part II:

Concert performance with the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie.
 

Compulsory work:

Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo.
Students may only sit for the Final Examination Part II once they have achieved results at the level of "very good"(1,0 – 1,5) in the Final examination Part I. Final Examination Part II will not be graded.
After completion of both Final Examinations an ungraded "Soloist Diploma" certificate will be awarded. Candidates who only complete Final Examination Part I, will be awarded an ungraded "Postgraduate Diploma in Performance" certificate.

Completed music studies and an audition (15-minute free programme and one movement from a work by J.S. Bach).
 

Course fees:

2,750 euros per year. Fees should be paid to the Koblenz International Guitar Festival & Academy.

VI) Further studies for music teachers in specialist music schools:

Subjects:

Guitar, teaching practice. All other subjects offered by the postgraduate department are optional.
 

Examinations:

Intrumental examination (30-minutes) and two demonstration lessons (both 45-minutes) for those studying for the Postgraduate Diploma in Guitar Studies. Those who do not wish to take the examination will receive a certificate of attendance.

Entry Requirements:

Completed music studies and performance experience, entrance interview as well as a performance audition.
 

Course fees:

2,750 euros per year. Fees should be paid to the Koblenz International Guitar Festival & Academy.
